 Levothyroxine is a natural hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Unfortunately, in some cases, the thyroid gland can not produce enough Levothyroxine needed by the body. It was then that the use of the drug is prescribed levothyroxine. The Levothyroxine drug is commonly called Synthroid. Apart from the treatment of hormone deficiency, Synthroid can also be used to treat enlargement of the thyroid gland also known as goiter. Synthroid has also been used to treat thyroid cancer .. Levothyroxine has a narrow therapeutic index and requires careful titration to avoid the consequences of over- or under-treatment. Many drugs interact with levothyroxine sodium. It is therefore necessary that regular adjustments be made to the Synthroid dose to maintain therapeutic response. Common side effects produced by Synthroid include fatigue, increased appetite, weight loss, heat intolerance, fever and excessive sweating. Some patients may also experience headaches, hyperactivity, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, emotional ability, insomnia. In rare cases, Synthroid has been found to lead to the arrest and impaired fertility, even heart. For adults and adolescents, the dose is from 0.0125 to 0.05 mg once daily for the first taken. As you go about the treatment, your doctor may increase your dosage until you reach 0.075 to 0.125 mg. The recommended dose should not exceed 0.15 mg for one day. For children less than six months, the dose is calculated according to body weight and determined by the physician. The usual dose typically varies from 0.025 to 0.05 mg once daily. For children six months to 1 year, the dose is still based on body weight and would averagely range from 0.05 to 0.075 mg once a day. For children 1 to 5 years, body weight is still the primary consideration and the dosage must be within 0.075 to 0.1 mg once a day. For children 6-10 years, the dosage is always based on the body weight and shall be from 0.10 to 0.15 mg per day. For children over 10 years, the dosage is again based on the body weight and shall be from 0.15 to 0.2 mg once a day.
